Community based initiatives are only in their infancy in Slovakia. Groups of citizens are starting processes of participative municipal budgets and several micro level initiatives, especially in agriculture, are popping up. Cooperatives had a good tradition at the beginning of the 20th century, but were compromised during the era of collectivisation and state ownership.

Friends of the Earth Slovakia-CEPA focuses on community energy projects like the biomass project in Pol’ana. The main barriers for similar projects are lack of capital and trust, but awareness is increasing that a self-sufficient local economy is a great opportunity for our regions.

If you are interested or already actively involved in such initiatives do get in touch with us and we may help you navigate some of the pitfalls. We are also especially interested in local municipalities who want to work together with us.

Send us your ideas or questions.
